As a self-taught artist, James Lai explores the human condition. In particular, he focuses on the thoughts, expressions and emotions of the people around him. Through careful observation, he captures mental snapshots of people’s emotions and translates these into his work. Employing a loose painting style, James uses bold brush strokes and limited colour blending to depict his subjects. The simplicity of shape, form and colour result in striking works that bring out the complex and beautiful emotions of the people he paints.
