Ones to watch: Angeline Bartholomeusz

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

Artist Angeline Bartholomeusz uses landscape as a metaphor, painting snapshots of memories in a bid to capture a sense of space and feeling. Following a successful career in science and business, and after a decade of self-taught painting, she made the decision to pursue painting full time just last year. Inspired by various Australian landscape masters, her works are richly textured and layered compositions, often featuring an enigmatic superimposed human figure. A finalist in Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize in 2019 and National Capital Art Prize in 2021, Bartholomeusz received an Honorable Mention at the Victorian Artist Society’s 2022 Spring Exhibition. The artist was this year awarded 1st place People’s Choice from Glen Eira Artists Society and is currently working on a series entitled A Sense of Belonging, which explores the enduring impact of the White Australia policy on the construction of contemporary Australian identity.
