Ones to watch: Bronni Krieger

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

Located in Melbourne, Bronni Krieger paints animal and human subjects in a style reminiscent of 19th century naturalism, with a tender hand that evokes a sense of vulnerability. While honouring Australia’s native flora and fauna, she provides a platform for the voiceless, highlighting topical issues including deforestation, natural disasters and the ongoing climate crisis. Krieger’s art probes not only the relationships between plants and animals, but equally their relationships with humankind. Her recent exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs, Melbourne, paid homage to natural history artist Elizabeth Gould. As the importance of environmental art continues to gain recognition, Krieger has been a finalist in numerous recent art prizes, including The EMSLA Still Life Award (2018), the Kilgour Prize (2020) and semi-finalist in the Darling Portrait Prize (2019). In 2023, Krieger is a finalist in both the WAMA Art Prize and the National Capital Art Prize.
