Tom Phillips’ Venus is an artwork of raw emotion. Unlike traditional goddesses who revel in their nudity, Tom’s figure is one of anxiety, fear, and pain. In a society where women’s bodies are judged on a daily basis and more often than not, found wanting, it is unsurprising that the modern Venus is unhappy in her own skin. Her body is carved out using heavy strokes of black and white, harshly delineating the contours of her breasts, hips, and stomach. Thick layers of paint slash across her curves like cuts as she hugs herself, her face contorted into a pained moue. She stands alone in a nondescript neighbourhood, her surroundings composed in an expressionist style that embodies internal conflict. The houses have their curtains drawn tight, leaving her with no audience and yet the placement of the figure outside amongst the suburban hedgerows leaves her vulnerable: she is both exposed and alone. While the figure and her surrounds are abstracted, Tom’s style injects his work with emotion made physical, and it is hard for his viewers not to empathise with Venus’ grief and despair.
