Luke Morgan’s oil on board work, Isolation, encompasses the isolation-induced anxiety that swept the world in 2020 due to the global pandemic. “The pressure to remain at home and the fear of infection,” says Luke, “had a significant impact on mental health.” His work illustrates his own uncertainty and the inherent ambiguity of the global situation. Luke depicts himself multiple times and in various states of being, almost as if he is blending in with the walls of his house. “This self-portrait aims to depict a distortion of reality,” the artist says, “a fading away and separation from society. A veil hangs across the face, questioning the sense of self and a loss of identity.” This feeling is echoed with the presence of a glass vase, used to trap the apple tree, a symbol of life and growth. Despite the reality he is being faced with, Luke’s resilience and hope is seen through his piercing gaze.
