The work: Frankie Nankivell, Shutters Down. Acrylic paint and ink on canvas paper, 86 x 61cm.
On one of her walks around the Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill, Frankie Nankivell was taken aback by the rapid gentrification taking over the Inner West area. Shutters Down serves as a homage to the death of local community as she paints a final snapshot of the street before its impending urban makeover. With its doors closed and facades rife with graffiti, the crane looming in the background only accentuates the morbidity of the situation. Frankie mixes intense colour with unsteady lines to exaggerate the instability of change and its effect on reality. “Change is inevitable and good,” the artist says. “Yet we lose something when these unique small businesses disappear from our neighbourhoods.”
