When creating their work crossbones style, artist Felix Atkinson states that they “reflected deeply on what intimacy really meant, being something that went beyond physical touch.” This notion of intimacy permeates the work, with the figures almost folding into one another, seemingly physically attached. Though abstractly rendered, their faces contain a depth of emotion, with quick, rough strokes in blue and red writing their innermost thoughts directly onto their skin. However, there is a touch of melancholy in the piece, suggesting this openness of intimacy can convert into pain when not met equally by each party. While still connected, the colours used to render the figures are not quite in sync, neither are their faces equally detailed or distinct. The disconnect between the two figures is clear, and yet they remain connected, together. This can be read as an image of heartache, with a relationship slowly coming undone before the eyes of the viewer. Alternatively, the work can equally be seen as one of hope, and of connections that persevere despite the pressures of emotional turmoil or stagnation. Despite their disconnect, the figures lean toward each other, their intense vulnerability on display in the hope of reciprocation.
