For artist Brooke Campbell, having full ownership of a certain item or idea correlates with being true to one’s self without any form of fabrication or external influence. From Me To You expresses the importance of individuality and the preservation of one’s personality within a society that lives largely behind a digital screen. “I felt like I needed to paint this as a sort of changing of the guard so to speak for the direction of my work moving forward,” she says. “This painting is my statement about how important it is for my work to be mine from conception to completion.” The high level of technical skill in Brooke’s self-portrait has us questioning its materiality. While it could easily pass off as a mirror-selfie, we soon realise that the camera has played no role in the conception of this oil-painted work.
