While Melbourne-based photographer Brent Lukey can often be found snapping portraits of the stars of the silver screen, he also spends time capturing everyday moments on the street. “I am fascinated by the way people inhabit and interact with each other in public spaces,” he says. “The boundaries they create, the shape and colour of their clothing, the way they fit within their surrounds.” This eye for the extraordinary in the ordinary is evident in his work The Yellow Dress, where the figure of a woman is caught suspended between two stretches of shadow, her dress brilliantly illuminated.
The contrast of light and dark in this piece is striking; negative space is created by the usually quotidian forms of asphalt and scaffolding, and intense colours of regular life are accentuated. The yellow of the subject’s dress is echoed in the lines of the road and the colour of a nearby bin lid, and the forceful contours of her body as she strides out of frame are mirrored by the architecture beyond. Through his acute powers of observation, an otherwise nondescript moment in time becomes a powerful reminder that there is beauty around every corner.
