Ones to Watch: Sophie Victoria

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

Sophie Victoria is a multidisciplinary artist residing in Sydney, whose practice explores the juncture between the tangible and immaterial. Using processes of concealing and revealing, mirroring and space, the artist makes abstract connections to theories of the Self and the Other, Object Desire, and the Sublime. In her current works, traditional high art mediums such as paint and sculpture collide with materials like kitsch synthetics fabrics, photo, and new media. The effect? Theatrical, immersive, and experimental works that demand to be looked at. Victoria completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the National Art School in 2021, and has since found representation in the UK, Canada, and Greece. A finalist in the 2022 Sir John Sulman Prize, her work appeared at Art Basel Miami 2022/23 and Art Toronto 2022/23. Already an accomplished practitioner, Victoria is currently honing her skills with a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing.
