Ones to Watch: Lisa McKimmie

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

Since returning to Australia in late 2020 after two decades abroad, Lisa McKimmie has hit the ground running to re-establish her practice locally. Her landscape-based paintings explore the psychological and perceptual dimensions of our changing natural environment and how we relate to landscape through memory, with more recent works employing horizontal and vertical lines to lend texture and obscure detail. McKimmie’s studio practice aims for a zero-waste painting and drawing process, stemming from her long-held interest and involvement with sustainability. Following a successful solo exhibition with Gaffa Gallery, Sydney in 2021, her works have been shortlisted for the National Capital Art Prize, Paddington Art Prize, Portia Geach Memorial Award, Blacktown City Art Prize, Calleen Art Prize, Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, and The Grace Cossington Smith Art Award. McKimmie recently completed a residency at the BigCi (Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives) in The Blue Mountains, and was named Runner Up in the 2022 Remagine Art Prize.
