Ones to watch: Kerry Males

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

While studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at Massey University, Wellington, Blenheim-born artist Kerry Males developed a strong interest in Abstract Expressionism. Using the canvas as a stage for a performance of movements and actions, his paintings are characterised by violent brush strokes and other forms of energetic gesture that lend a thrilling sense of spontaneity. With no premeditated subject matter, Males strives to capture the embodied experience of making a painting. “My practice does not portray reality, but rather focuses on emotions and reactions that objects and events provoke within a person,” he says. “My work is a reflection of life and helps provide a better understanding of myself and the world around me.” After graduating, Males left New Zealand to travel Europe, presenting exhibitions in London and Strasbourg, France. His work features on the label for Organico Wines, and he is currently working towards opening his own gallery.
