Ones to Watch: Jude Williams

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

Using original and appropriated photographic images as source material, Jude Williams explores the connections between painting, photography, and video. By applying layer upon layer of thick paint resembling yarn, Williams transforms images on the canvas, imbuing them with a sense of vitality, as if perpetually in motion. “This process allows me to resuscitate meaningful old works and my own photographs by travelling to places in my psyche I cannot physically go,” she says. “The final works, like thick homemade jumpers and tapestries, embody a meditation of memory both present and past.” Since completing a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) in 2018, Williams has held several solo and group art shows throughout wider Sydney. From 2020-2022, she has also been a finalist in numerous prestigious local prizes including the Paddington, Mosman, Fisher’s Ghost, and Greenway Art Prizes.
