Ones to Watch: Amanda Emmett

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

The world in transition and the fragility of the natural environment are the focus of Cairns-based artist Amanda Emmett’s richly detailed, fluid paintings. “I try to convey how being in a certain environment makes us feel – the dilemmas, disturbing truths, and repercussions of the choices we make in our social behaviour, what we consume, and the pollution we create,” says Emmett. Precise and crisply delineated colour and shape reflects the clarity of Emmett’s artistic objective – to encourage viewers to comprehend what is at stake while we witness the destruction of the natural world, and the urgent need for remedy and renewal. Following a solo exhibition at Cairns Art Gallery earlier this year, Emmett’s work will appear in a group exhibition titled This is Planet Earth from 19 August to 13 September at & Gallery Australia, Melbourne and she will show a solo exhibition at the gallery’s Ocean Beach Road Sorrento gallery from 2 to 26 September.
