What’s going on in your work?
As a multidisciplinary artist I work across painting, installation and photography. I use line, colour and form as tools to deconstruct aspects of the urban and natural landscape, reconstructing them as elements in abstract compositions through a playful process.
When and how did you first fall in love with art?
Growing up in New York I have memories of being absorbed for hours playing with the possibilities of colour and using my hands to build and make things. The tactile nature of making was there then, and it has never left. I was particularly drawn to tactile toys and games like Lite-Brite, painting kits, even photography. Hula hoops and pogo sticks were my go-to and these shapes and memories still influence my work today.
When does inspiration strike?
I am based in Sydney and my studio often looks a lot like a kindergarten room as I like to collect things – which often give me inspiration – and surround myself with colour. As great as it is to have a physical space to make work, at times I find inspiration comes from being outside the studio. There is a freedom of being in nature whether it’s a walk or a morning run – they enable space for ideas to flow. I love that feeling of something that stops me in my tracks. However, artist residencies are my absolute go-to for creative inspiration. To have that time to be able to explore ideas and really absorb and become one with the environment whether that is in nature or the city. It’s where many of my larger projects have developed from. I find it an absolute necessity to have this time away from my day-to-day world to engage and let my creative thoughts flourish.
How long have you been practicing as an artist?
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2015) and a Master of Fine Arts (2016) from the National Art School, Sydney. I have practised as an artist consistently since, but even before then I was always making, visiting galleries and enrolling in various art disciplines. Even within my previous careers in investment banking and show management I sought out creative opportunities.
What materials do you use and why?
I do like to experiment with materials especially if I am doing an installation. I use a wide variety of art and non-art materials such as paint, canvas, a variety of tapes, Perspex, aluminium, photography, stretcher bars, video projection and even building blocks.
What have you been working on recently?
I am working towards a group exhibition, Architecture and Beyond, at the Incinerator Art Space in Sydney in 2022. My installation work titled Lot 99 responds to the built elements of a house and site in Castlecrag, designed by Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffin.
