Describe your art practice.
I digitally illustrate intricate patterns, floral still lifes and geometric forms. It’s the way I see the world and the minute details that escape many. I want to captivate the world with the simplest and most beautiful moments in life. I have fun with it and use my work to inspire and embolden others. My work is exaggerated, fluid and slightly distorted with bold use of colour.
When and how did you first fall in love with art?
In primary school I struggled to understand phonics and found drawing and art the easiest way to communicate and express myself. My first-grade teacher quickly became aware and encouraged and nurtured my skills. It wasn’t until my first year of high school that I discovered I had a passion for drawing digitally. My first digital piece was of the Mona Lisa to cover my art sketch book. My art teacher at the time was very impressed and that’s when I knew I wanted my career path to be design orientated. I never imagined I’d turn my digital art into my own business – Studio Speckles. I progressed to university to study a Bachelor of Interior Architecture but missed the creative freedom of creating a piece of art that didn’t have to subscribe to a design brief.
Where are you based & is there anything special about your studio?
I have recently relocated to an old 1920s bungalow house in Largs Bay in Adelaide. I am close to the water and love the freedom and inspiration of the natural environment lapping at our doorstep. My studio resides in the light filled sunroom at the back of the house. It doubles as my toddler’s playroom. I am expecting another “assistant” in early September so the space will evolve to become a nursery-studio hybrid. I would say it’s a special space full of energy!
What is your subject matter?
Mainly floral still lifes but I’ve branched out in recent times to everything from the anatomy of insects to the human brain at microscopic level. I find inspiration everywhere; from a picture, colour palette, textiles, to a piece of furniture or a bunch of flowers. Once I’m inspired the idea doesn’t go away until it’s been expressed into art.
What is your dream artistic project?
Textiles! Cushions, bed linen and throw blankets inspired by my art. I’m slowly working towards this dream, but it requires a lot of research to get it right. I would ideally like my whole fabrication process to be Australian made, sustainable and organic. It will take some time to get right but watch this space!
