Expert Eye: Living With Colour

IT’S NO SECRET that colour is my passion. The emotion it invokes, the subtleties within each shade, its capacity to completely change a space (especially within the home) – colour can do so much! Oscar Wilde said it best when he stated: “Mere colour can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.”

With the colder months upon us, we’re in for shorter days and darker skies. It’s easy to let the winter weather affect our moods and, in turn, our spaces. Here are some handy tips to avoid the winter blues and help you celebrate colour in your home.

LET ART LEAD

Art can help inform your palette and guide you in choosing accessories.  Find an unsuspecting colour within a piece and reference it in the space for a considered look.

LIFT YOUR MOOD

Incorporate colours that brighten your space. I often reach for yellow accents to warm up a room and spark it with joy. It doesn’t have to be yellow of course – it just needs to be a colour that makes you feel good. Colour is subjective, and it matters little what others think of your choice. It only matters that you love it!

LAYER UP

Textiles effectively add depth and layering to a space and are an easy way to introduce colour. Decadent velvets in jewel tones can add warmth and colour to a space, as can chunky knit throws and mixed bed linen.

TAKE THE LEAP

If you are feeling adventurous, paint the walls! There is no easier way to inject colour and life into a space than with a fresh coat of paint. Always try a sample pot first to ensure the colour interacts with the light the way you want it to.
