Through flowing, abstract brushstrokes and a gestural application of colour, Baumgartner has created a piece which is truly joyous. The multi-layered approach adds texture and depth, adding further intrigue. I would love to see this piece take centre-stage in a living room setting. It would work exceptionally well paired with natural elements such as timber and leather furniture, indoor greenery, and a plush wool rug, with the beautiful hues reflected in décor pieces.

The joyful fusion of colour and bold brushstrokes in this work transmit an energy that makes it feel as if its bursting off the canvas. The balance of colour intensity across the canvas creates depth and, although abstract, creates the illusion of organic forms. If hung in a light-filled entrance hall, I would play on the forms with terracotta tiled floors and a soft, seafoam colour on the walls. The elegant contour console from Zuster Furniture in an oak finish placed below and a terracotta tiled wall light from South Drawn alongside, then complete the scene with a hand- knotted wool, silk, and thistle rug in warm, earthy tones.

Lena Baumgartner’s work expresses pure joy and there is a lot of inspiration to pull from when styling it at home. The soft peach, lilac and blush tones can all be referenced in soft furnishings; cushions, throws and smaller décor. This will create a cohesion in a space but will let the artwork sing with its contrasting pops of blues.
