THE ART EDIT TEAM TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT THESE ARTWORKS

The work: Sam Kariotis, 1000 Lizards. Digital Collage, 30 x 30cm.

Armed with a laptop, multi-disciplinary artist Sam Kariotis compiles, splices and crops his way to humorous compositions that reimagine classical Baroque paintings from 15th to 17th-century Europe. As a transgender person, Sam is fascinated by the manipulation of perceptions, frequently exploring the intersections of magic, technology, space and the unconscious. 1000 Lizards is about meeting multiple deities or cosmic forces at once, and was inspired by the music of American duo 100 Gecs. “All of my works tend to be semi-abstract, but I wanted to create a really chaotic energy in this piece,” Sam says. The viewer needn’t fully comprehend all of the references to enjoy the work’s playfulness and irreverence.
