One look at Dr. Caralluma plunges the viewer headfirst into a psychedelic wonderland. Smooth and synthetic blocks of candy colours almost vibrate atop a contrasted grainy underlayer, coming together to form a plant that seems almost alien. This extra-terrestrial life form is in fact the Caralluma fimbriata, a cactus native to India. New Zealand based artist Priscilla Hunter is fascinated by the weird and wonderful of the natural world, and the human race’s ever-changing relationship with it. The Caralluma fimbriata was historically used by locals to supress appetite, but this traditional approach has been subsumed by Western consumer society, who have condensed it into diet pills. Much like life, Priscilla’s art transforms nature with zany colour schemes and colour blocking, turning this peculiar plant into something more appealing. The natural textures of the plant, much like the wood Priscilla uses as a base for her works, are smoothed to a plastic sheen, and its colours are mutated and transmogrified to form something entirely new.
