A playful and joyous depiction of his studio, Phil Stallard’s Lyre Bird Dreams of a Cockatoo is a textural ode to the sounds and sights of the bush. The artist’s use of negative space lets the eye roam peacefully around the various elements, lending the image a light, harmonious feel. Some features of the pared back composition are easily recognisable; the eponymous cockatoo, whose head enters the side of the frame at a jaunty angle; or the architectural features below. Other components are more abstracted, relying on line and gesture to replicate the sensory experience of nature.
This fits with Stallard’s practice, which he describes as “emotional abstractionism”. By dispensing with realism, the artist gives precedence to the ambiance of nature as he experiences it. Trees are rendered in bright swathes of pink and blue, and the sound of leaves and wind, as Stallard experiences them, are translated in expressive tracts of lyrical form. Stallard’s decades of experience are on full display within this piece, expertly distilling his observations into their composite parts for his viewers to decipher while maintaining a sense of fun and wit.
