The abstract forms and crisp edges in Peter Brook’s work Approaching Capacity no. 30 show the Melbourne-based artist pushing the boundaries of his practice. Where once his canvases were populated by reduced organic forms, he has moved from the natural world to the digital one, turning instead to arrangements that evoke our increasing digital dependence. Alternating dashes of light blue and purple sit atop sharply defined rectilinear planes, conjuring associations with the binary and barcodes that have become omnipresent in our rapidly changing world.
Impressions of orderly, harmonic and calming tones used in this work reflect the sense of security that communication technologies may bring, as opposed to the anxieties raised by having to re-emerge into reality. However, the artist intentionally retains the painter’s hand in this piece, refusing to completely eliminate the texture of the linen below or the strokes of his brush. Though using a minimalist reductive aesthetic, his formalised and elemental language still appreciates the beauty of the handmade and the human.
