A trip to the Warlukurlangu Arts Centre in the remote Walpiri community of Yuendumu left a striking impression on Liz Clark, stirring her to capture its scenes in her latest body of work. LONELY TOWN reveals the long-held love of colour and design Liz attributes to childhood memories of observing her family’s screen-printing business.
Working from a photographic image and memory, Liz’s work comes into being by applying background colour to the entire board. Details then gradually emerge in chalk and charcoal: a camp dog freely roams a vast rural landscape scattered with abandoned vehicles and disused buildings. Once Liz realises a convincing perspective and relationship between shape and form she adds layers of colour and light to bring the painting to life in vibrant strokes. These elements ultimately come together to depict a typical Yuendumu scene in a quiet, sun-drenched town. It’s a perfect embodiment of the peaceful fragility of outback settlement.
