Inspired by her mother’s dementia, Karen Prakhoff Rickman’s monoprint, Drift, encapsulates the ambiguity and malleability of memory, as seen through the prominent use of the colour grey. For Karen, grey insinuates a multitude of meanings, ranging from the feeling of emptiness when one is unable to retain their thoughts, to that of closing your eyes and attempting to remember past memories. The colour also resonates heavily with ash; the colour left by recent bushfires across Australia. Both dementia and the remains left by a bushfire, accentuate the feeling of elusiveness and detachment Karen attempts to capture through her work. While abstract, the intricate patterns within Karen’s work speaks of the complicated nature of memory, and its importance in shaping one’s future. Through her use of white space, Karen gives her viewers the space to build their own connections and memories with the artwork. “We are inextricably linked with the environment,” says Karen. “Through my works I seek to create ambiguous, evocative landscapes as a personal reflection on memory, identity and time.”
