The relentless heat, long shadows and languid landscape of an Australian summer informs Inel Date’s latest body of work. The Winds Message captures the vast tapestry of colour, scale and pattern found amongst these dusty landscape structures. It is revealing of her interaction with the sun-scorched land, as she’s drawn into its colours, history and interplay of light and dark. There is a focus on composition and fragmentism, revealing the seasonal patchwork of light and shadows. Lush greens are woven between pared back biscuit hues, while paddocks and pathways criss-cross each other beneath dry southern skies. This style emanates a meditative, calming and contemplative mood, encouraging reflection on the dual beauty and austerity of such environments that constantly await the relief of rain. Inel seeks to further understand and document place in a particular moment in time, communicating its complex narrative to the viewer.
