While many of us find lockdown to be a drain on our energy and creativity, artist Arrayah Loynd instead finds remarkable inspiration in adversity. Confined to her home, with only herself as a model, Loynd produced an entire series of works, including All That’s Required is Your Silence. A shrouded figure drifts in and out of focus, her dress sliding out of frame and her mouth slashed by a rough gold line. Described by the artist as a “visceral and personal exploration of what it is to be a woman”, this particular work is a statement on current social trends concerning female autonomy, and the increasing efforts being made to silence women voicing opinions regarding their own bodies, minds and desires. Loynd’s work seeks to make visible the routine of abuse, depicting a hazy interior world charged with a sense of danger and violence.
By blending photography with digital painting, her experimental works are free to move beyond the usual constraints of traditional photography, which has proved an exceptionally effective method to convey scenes that are designed to address the intersection between harsh realities and internal conflicts. This work is both beautiful and threatening, charged with a sense of hopelessness that many women may find familiar.
