Ones to Watch:Pimpisa Tinpalit

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Maddy Matheson writes.

Thai-born, Melbourne-based artist Pimpisa Tinpalit holds a Masters in Fine Art from Silpakorn University in Bangkok, where she went on to lecture for four years. Tinpalit has exhibited extensively worldwide in Thailand, Japan, Singapore, the USA, Korea, Hong Kong, and Australia, and has been working as an artist for more than 20 years. Since arriving in Australia in 2009, Tinpalit has carved out a significant place in the Australian art scene. In 2016 she established BLACKCAT Gallery, a popular artist-run gallery located in the heart of Melbourne. Over the past few years, Tinpalit has been working on Silence, an ongoing series that forces the viewer into a direct contemplation with ideas surrounding death. As the artist puts it: “Death is not the end but a transformation to a new beginning.” Using long tendrils of thick black nylon rope entwined around and across large-scale canvases, Tinpalit’s recent work Silence #1.6 is a metaphorical weaving together of morality and immorality. When standing before the work you are enveloped by its darkness, yet the rope extends out into the light. Tinpalit will show the next iteration of this series, Silence #1.7 at Counihan Gallery, Melbourne, from 4 June to 24 July 2022.
