Ones to Watch:Peggy Zephyr

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Maddy Matheson writes.

Peggy Zephyr comes to the easel with only two directives: no rules, no limitations. After experimenting with micro-dosing psilocybin (a naturally occurring psychedelic compound), Zephyr has pushed her practice to new levels of focus and confidence. “I see myself as a sort of art superhero – my mentor Willy Wonka,” she says. “The world in which I play is pure imagination and experimentation.” The London-born New South Wales-based artist was a finalist in the 2021 national STILL award, held by Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, with her work BOOM! winning its People’s Choice Award. The painting was then acquired by The Coffs Harbour Regional gallery as part of its private collection. Zephyr has shown in several group and solo shows throughout Australia and her work is held in private collections in Australia, the United States and Europe. While her painting and textile works are playful and grounded in experimentation, they contain an important message. “One thing I’m serious about,” she says, “is making art less serious and elitist.”
