Art Edit has selected Simone Darcy as an outstanding artist to have on your radar.
Born in Bedgerabong on Wiradjuri land in rural NSW, Simone Darcy is an early-career artist based in lutruwita/Tasmania. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours, her distinct practice employs cameraless image-making and darkroom processes in inventive ways. Using performance strategies within the still image to explore ideas of abstraction, embodiment, and self, Darcy also conveys physical and psychological effects on the body through the photogram and chemigram processes. “My work continues to reference my experiences as a woman, artist and mother,” she says. Darcy’s work has been exhibited both in Australia and abroad, with several solo exhibitions and residencies under her belt. Her work has also been selected in numerous prizes including The National Photographic Portrait Prize, Head On Portrait Prize, The Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photographic Prize, and awarded Best Portrait at the Centre of Contemporary Photography.
