Ones to watch: Matt Cauchi

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

There’s nothing that mixed media artist Matt Cauchi loves more than creating texture. “I’m infatuated with the process — building layer after layer and sanding it back to reveal these intricate little windows of intense, tactile hues and finding the beautiful balance between minimal and explosive.” Based in Sydney, the artist’s striking paintings combine abstract minimalism and Fauvism. Concealing much of the base layers in his work, Cauchi’s works appear reminiscent of archaeological artefacts, aiming for a final composition that creates “a purposeful and considered dichotomy of beauty and chaos.” Cauchi’s works are highly collectible in their ability to adapt with the character of their setting, seamlessly integrating with existing surroundings. Most recently, Cauchi exhibited work at The Other Art Fair, Sydney 2022 and continues to complete commissions for collectors all over the world.
