Art Edit has selected Jorge Mariño Brito as an outstanding artist to have on your radar.
Cuban-born artist Jorge Mariño Brito reflects on his immigrant journey and channels these experiences into art. Now based in Brisbane, his work encompasses contemporary papermaking, painting, and printmaking, probing issues of gender, sexuality, and otherness. Through a process of layering cotton and linen pulps, Brito constructs large, delicate compositions with uniquely dynamic surfaces. Evidence of the artist’s hand is preserved in the textures and abstract markings of his creations, wherein paper is not merely the medium, but the very essence of the artwork. Brito won the Iain Turnbull Memorial Award for printmaking in 2023 and is this year’s recipient of the Grey Hand Press Internship. Currently in his final year of a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Queensland College of Art and Design, his work will be showcased in the paper contemporary category of Sydney Contemporary 2024.
