Where are you based?
In the breath-taking Blue Mountains with my wife and five children. I don’t have a studio, but I plan on converting my standalone 1950s garage into an art studio.
When and how did you first fall in love with art?
I have a background in engineering. Art was never something I imagined doing or was particularly drawn to, however in 2017 I came out as transgender and lost everything I had. I went from having a job, a house and a family to being miserable, lonely, unemployed, broke and homeless. The first artwork I produced in February 2018 was to stay occupied. A friend gifted me some paints and Mina Alice Art was born. Five months later I had my first collaborative exhibition. Two years later my first solo exhibition, as well as marrying the love of my life and then three years later I won my first national art prize.
Did you study fine arts or are you self-taught?
I am purely self-taught. My first painting I did in February 2018 with eyebrow pencils as I didn’t have any art supplies. Every piece I do is an exercise in learning. To me, life is an exercise in learning.
What does a typical day in the studio involve?
My typical day involves working a full-time job, as well as looking after and spending time with my family. In brief moments throughout the day, I get inspiration and write notes and lists for future artworks. I will often paint on a Friday night on my loungeroom floor while my wife crochets and we watch documentaries.
What is your subject matter?
The human form and how I can use it to tell my life story. Every visceral or joyful emotion is cathartically reflected on the canvas while I share my story. I hope that it helps audiences who see my work and are going through hard times.
Pick three art world players you would invite to dinner.
The first would be Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist and story-teller Jonathan Jones for his captivating contemporary artworks. I’m drawn to his installation works such as untitled (teacups and oysters), blue poles and untitled (barra), because of the narrative behind each work. I remember reading a remark that said he, “looks at big issues in an understated way”. I appreciate that sentiment. To me, art is a useful tool for exploring larger issues in a digestible way. Another would be Salvador Dalí because while he could paint like everyone else, he became a pioneer of his own respective style, which I admire. And the third would be Anh Do because he is an incredibly talented artist, comedian and author.
