Where are you based?
I’m in Sydney on Wallumedegal Country in an old family home that once held parties hosting creatives in the 1970s. It’s a Californian bungalow currently undergoing renovations to establish a new studio, workshop and gallery space, with an aim to preserve its collective memories.
When and how did you first fall in love with art?
As a child my father, a jazz pianist and composer, filled the home with sounds and beats of bossa nova, bebop, samba, swing and a healthy dose of the classics. On the wall were reproductions of Pablo Picasso’s Mandolin and Guitar and Édouard Manet’s Music in the Tuileries Gardens. The sensory combination of the visual and auditory art forms inevitably created a lullaby for my soul. No matter what was happening, I could trust that the music and the art would stay constant. I could look into those images, listen to the music and imagine my own world of play.
How long have you been practicing as an artist?
While on a scholarship to study Chinese language and culture in Taiwan, I began studies in Chinese fine arts, and found a particular affinity with the energy and spontaneity of the free style of Cao Shu calligraphy and the expressive ink washes of Xie Yi painting. I had found something new yet familiar. More recently I have been immersed in the arts in Australia, having completed an Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts, a Masters in Contemporary Art, and further studies in Museum and Gallery Skills. The creative arts are therapeutic and I continue to study out of passion.
When do you feel your most creative?
Music and contemplation are key to creating the ideal space and flow in the studio. I love to play and experiment with different mediums, combinations and forms, and the studio often appears like a science laboratory of tests, and observations. A whole day of play sets up an evening where the artwork begins and once this starts the process can often go late into the night, crossing over to the dawn.
What’s going on in your works?
My work reflects observations of the place, space and emotions that I find myself inhabiting. A cathartic process of both meditation and contemplation. It’s a visual translation or processing of sounds, sights and feelings. Emotion and memory are the primary elements of each artwork. Observations of the here and now; connections and disconnections held in the mediums of memory.
What materials do you use and why?
Flowing oil mediums have been an ongoing fascination for me. Watching materials dance on surfaces and allowing the process of time and environment to create in collaboration, giving space to blend, meld and yield the unexpected. The end results are suspended reactions in time. The process of observation is most exciting for me, watching moments of being.
