Why did you decide to open a gallery?
We evolved organically from my own home studio to a much larger leased warehouse as we dramatically and quickly outgrew the home space. I found myself inadvertently becoming a gallerist as we had a framing workshop and many of my artist friend’s works were there. As collectors visited, they started to express keen interest in purchasing other works as well, so Studio Gallery was born. We then purchased a massive warehouse space and fully renovated it, New York style.
How long has the gallery been running:
Our Dissik Street, Cheltenham Gallery was opened to a crowd of more than 500 people in March 2018. The expansive converted warehouse has been designed and renovated to offer one of Melbourne’s largest exhibition spaces and stockrooms.
In late 2018, we opened our gallery in the heart of Armadale, 1238 High Street. This two-level, sun-filled gallery exhibits a carefully curated selection of works from our artist stable. Last year we opened our first interstate gallery in Danks St, Waterloo. The Sydney gallery renovation was extensive, formerly housing the Fratelli Fresh food market. 2021 will now see the gallery more than quadruple in size, with the renovation of the upstairs loft already underway.
What makes Studio Gallery Group unique?
The vision I held when establishing our galleries was to respond to the collector markets with a fresh set of eyes and distinctly global approach. We are absolutely passionate about our physical gallery spaces. They all reflect a sophisticated, dramatic backdrop befitting of our artist stable.
We took a strong, transparent lead with regards to publishing all pricing and details online where works can be purchased end to end, therefore meeting new collectors in their own preferred manner.
What types of artist do you represent?
We have been completely humbled by the sheer depth and breadth of talent we represent, now with more than 80 artists from emerging right through to mid and advanced career stages. Studio Gallery will continue to evolve with an inclusive approach to genres and a close eye on the global talent scene. Many of our collectors are missing their international travel and with our fourth gallery space opening this year, we have the physical capacity to accommodate even more talent.
What do you hope to achieve with the gallery spaces?
Imagine walking into an art space that seeks to involve and assault your senses upon arrival. Our intentions are to listen to our clients closely to gain an understanding of where they are at in their art journey, and what they seek from an art experience. We enjoy breaking down the fear of curious collectors asking questions.
What’s coming up at Studio Gallery Group?
All spaces will be running group shows in conjunction with solos for Lilianne Ivins, and a collaborative show for Neil Tomkins and Digby Webster.
