With her mind set on undermining the calcified norms of traditional subjects and media, Chelsea Chivers produces works that are a dazzling collision between convention and innovation. Chelsea’s work explores the expectations placed upon women as a result of the standards set by the Western canon of Catholicism, rupturing boundaries using candy-coloured neon. A number of her works take aim at the iconic silhouette of the Madonna, reimagining core Christian imagery of the perfect woman using the modern medium of NeonFlex and embracing the grungy undertones that the medium brings.
In the art world, neon conjures associations of Minimalism and Modernism, but beyond the walls of the museum, neon also brings to mind the blinking signs of many sleazy establishments. These conflicting connotations bring new layers to time-honoured iconographic codes, updating their associations with contemporary expectations. Chelsea also re-examines the medium of embroidery. By transforming needlework designs made by women in her family into large scale works made with electroluminescent wire, she catapults them into a new context. By using neon and light, Chelsea’s practice provides a timely reconsideration of femininity and commercialisation of the female form in the modern world.
