Born in a small village in North Sumatra, Indonesia from a Sumatran Christian mother and a Guandong, China Taoist father, Jayanto Tan uses his practice to reflect on his diasporic upbringing. Having fled poverty and political repression, his practice blends Eastern and Western mythologies and recontextualises them with current events through ceramics, installation and performance. While his work speaks to issues of identity and migration, Tan offers a space for ritual, mediation and healing.
