Adam Southgate seeks to explore the symbiotic relationship between painting and film. Southgate’s theoretical approach to his practice, using filmic methods of mise-en-scene and montage, aims to recontextualise the allegorical power of images within the picture plane. Inspired by Futurist and Cubist techniques of layering perspectives, Southgate assesses contemporary painting’s ability to compress time and space, creating unity amongst disparate images.
