About the artwork:

Emergence is a series of unique photograms reflecting on changing seasons and life cycles. Compositions combine insect motifs with collected plant materials to reveal recognisable and imperceptible aspects of the subjects. Inspired by nature, science, and 19th-century photography, the interplay of light and shadow/ positive and negative, reference yet challenge traditional photography.

Drawing attention to the vulnerability of the nature, image making without a camera allows close manipulation and observation of the subject through the application of time, light and chemistry. The physical objects being captured are pressed to the silver gelatin emulsion of traditional photographic paper and exposed to light, forming a latent image at life size. The photograph is then developed through an experimental darkroom process. Each composition is unique due to the variables, and alchemy, at each stage of hand-printing. The resultant forms and tones can be likened to fixing the shadow of the specimens that once touched the paper to reveal ghostly and familiar shapes infused with the delicacy, translucency and workings of nature.

The cameraless photography method reduces the process to a foundational level, akin to the earliest era of photography in the 1840s. The works reference botanists and artists of the19th century, who used comparable historic processes in creating their photographs of the natural world.
