Sometimes it’s not easy to imagine how an artwork will work at home, in your own space. That’s where a 3D renderer, working alongside a designer, can deliver you certainty before a major purchase. For this edition of our Art Mood feature, we bring you a special collaboration between Juliette Wanty (JW), a New Zealand-based designer, stylist and art director, and Robin Douglas Barnes (RDB), a London-based 3D artist. The duo talk us through their creative practices, before we see their collaboration come to life, styling three fabulous artworks into three meticulously rendered interiors.

AE: Firstly, can you tell me a bit about yourselves?

JW: I am a designer and stylist, and the art director of New Zealand interior magazine, homestyle. I studied Industrial Design and following this sidestepped into the world of magazine publishing. I started out in graphic design roles which led to interior styling and art direction, working for various home, design and interior magazines over the years.

RDB: I’m a self-taught digital artist, I grew up in the south west of England and spent most of my time running about the countryside making short films. Over time my interests have transitioned away from film and more into the digital realm. I studied Graphic Communication and have lived in London for several years now working in various design and 3D production studios. This year I’ve made the decision to go freelance and to spend more time on my own practice which focuses on the visualisation of interior spaces and of objects designed for the home. I think that my love for interior spaces came from painting murals on my bedroom walls with my mother and building unusually shaped beds and wacky storage solutions with my father.

AE: Before we jump into your collaborative process, can you tell me about your personal design ethos?

JW: I guess I seek to create spaces with a sense of individual identity. A common thread is that I mix original design with second-hand finds, as this aligns with my values. I admire the design greats and contemporary studios and appreciate quality, lasting pieces – something old and new often share.

RDB: In my work there’s usually a sense of calm and I enjoy playing with aspects of realism, making people question whether something is real or not. I enjoy working with designers, like Juliette, learning and taking inspiration from them and my surroundings. I’m very much still discovering where I’m going with my own work.

AE: What do you think art adds to a home?

RDB: Art adds depth to a room and it completely changes the energy of the space.

JW: I agree, art adds depth to a home and gives it a soul – shifting a space away from the generic and into something personal and thus more meaningful.

Robin, for those of us who are unversed in digital practices, can you explain what a 3D render is?

RDB: In a nutshell, it’s a process of modelling, texturing, composing and lighting a scene to create an image, it can look and sound complicated but it can all be done within one piece of software, I use a program called Blender. The wonderful thing about 3D is that there are many ways to model an object. Textures can be mixed together to create something new, and equally there’s no right or wrong way to light a scene, it’s a process that rewards experimentation.

AE: You’ve worked collaboratively in the past, how did your partnership begin?

JW: I guess I initiated it. Robin’s striking 3D work caught my eye online and so I reached out about collaborating — which has been so great. It’s exciting to be working on more projects together.

Talk us through how you worked together to design and render the three beautiful spaces for Art Edit.

RDB: Juliette started the process, she created very detailed and well thought-out 2D layouts of each of the rooms, which were based off the artworks. But her collage-style layouts are works of art in their own right. I then focussed on ways to bring the concepts to life.

JW: Yes, I designed the interiors, specifying furnishings and taking cues from the artworks themselves for the aesthetic direction. They were then realised in 3D by Robin, whose wonderful sensibility with light and shadow gives these digital rooms a lifelike quality.

AE: What are your personal tastes when it comes to art?

JW: It’s not prescriptive, just whatever I am drawn to regardless of the medium. In saying that, I often find works that explore light through their materiality interesting. I recently saw the work of Jonny Niesche at Starkwhite gallery in Auckland – his use of saturated colour and optics is mesmerising.

RDB: I love sculpture and objects that are designed for the home. It’s far easier to model something in digital 3D than it is to fabricate something in real life, so I greatly admire the physical production process.

AE: While the three rooms are quite different, there are recurring design elements such as strong use of light and shape. What design features could you not live without for your projects?

JW: Form. I love sculptural pieces, whether it be a chair, lamp, vase, or the architecture of a space. I am endlessly fascinated by the way different forms can interact to create unique environments, which I think comes through in these three rooms.

RDB: I love light. For me lighting is the most exciting part of my design process. I love to paint with light, positing it in such a way that it brings out the texture, colour and shape of a room and the objects in it. Beautifully positioned light really makes the objects in a space sing.

AE: Do you have your own art collections at home?

RDB: I have a set of detailed leaf prints by my mother, a wooden carving by my father and unfired pottery created by my boyfriend at home during the lockdown of last year.

JW: I have begun slowly collecting art, from pieces by artist friends to coveted purchases. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but the most recent piece I have acquired is by Auckland artist Amy Unkovich whose work across painting and sculpture I’d long admired — making it exciting to finally have one of her works hanging at home.
