In Nat Anderson’s work we find ourselves adrift within swirling seas, alone but afloat in uncharted territory. Created during the COVID-19 lockdown period, Fathom reflects the tumultuous nature of our current experience as we grapple with uncertainty.
Nat’s work positions the viewer within the seascape: up close and personal without any reference point, sense of scale, familiarity or solid form. We are at the mercy of the swell. Lines continue off the canvas and paint is layered and purposely theatrical to heighten the sense of movement and depth within the work. “I wanted this work to leave the viewer with the notion that unprecedented events can bring into sharp focus rare moments of beauty and clarity,” Nat says. “Stripping everything back to the elemental opens us up to see all that we are missing when our gaze is on the horizon.”
