Melody Jones’ portraits make you look twice. Are they upside down, back to front or floating in mid-air? All of the above. Melody’s subjects are often performers, in the case of Portrait of a Flying Fruit Fly (aka Ruby Rowat) her subject is a trapeze artist flying through the air. Her portrait is about the movement, drama and performance of her subject as well as physical strength and athleticism. Often standing atop a ladder to complete her large-scale drawings, Melody finds her works often take on a life of their own. Energy and precariousness is harnessed by the charcoal she uses. “[Charcoal] allows the contours of the form to emerge or retract,” she says. “The ghosted marks are just as important to me as the more defined line.” While large figurative drawing is not new to the artist, the representation of the active female figure is. By studying the human figure in motion, Melody has ensured movement, colour and drama have found their way into her art.
