Self-taught, Sydney-based artist Lou Balsamine celebrates the beauty and harmony of nature. Many of her works adopt colour, texture and line to fabricate abstract-like depictions of her surrounds. Prompted by the artist’s favourite book, The Catcher in the Rye, “This work is about grappling with the angst that life sometimes puts us through”. Lou mixes various amounts of water into acrylic paint, allowing her to capture the rich texture, shape, and forms found in natural environments. The supple and elegant brushstrokes create visual representations of trees, rocks and ducks, yet they could easily be clouds, fish or leaves to another viewer. The ambiguity of form created by Lou results in a work with nostalgic ambience.
