Inspiration for great art can be found in the most unlikely of places. In the case of Overview – Night Drive, New Zealand-based artist Kaye McGarva found hers peeking out at her from an interview with rock critic and musician Nick Kent. A chance encounter with the shade of blue Kent used on the walls of his apartment in Paris turned into a painting that actively embraces chance and accident. Kaye prefers to use directional spray paint on loose canvas, as she says “there is a lot of room for accidental things to happen, which is an aspect I really enjoy about this process.” The end result is an image imbued with a sense of mystery and enigma. Is it a bird’s eye image of a mountain range, or a macro image of crumpled paper? Shapes move and flex, appearing concave in one moment and convex in the next as the viewer moves around the painting. Each new angle is another chance encounter with an otherworldly landscape, and another opportunity for her audience to look at the world a little bit differently.
