Joanna Cole uses the memory of artists past and present as her driving force. Closing in on home was inspired by an early 20th-Century painting by Hans Heysen, depicting a herd of cattle resting by a red gum. Joanna’s grandfather, an artist himself, appropriated the work during his career and Joanna decided to followed suit. “I follow the idea that the cult value of the original contributes to the value of the new work,” Joanna says. “The new work simultaneously reinvigorates interest and value in the original.” Her generational process breathes multiple lives into the work and invigorates the interchange of responses between the past and present within her art. Joanna uses earthy colours to emulate Heysen’s realist work, but takes it a step further in her ethereal expression of the natural landscape.
