The work: Hans Van Weerd, DOPPEL SELBSTBILDNIS (self-portrait after Egon Schiele). Oil on canvas, 79 x 51cm.
The work of Newport-based artist Hans van Weerd aspires to make permanent fleeting moments in time, creating enduring portraits of the tiny moments that make people who they are. In DOPPEL SELBSTBILDNIS (self-portrait after Egon Schiele) he has turned the spotlight to himself, painting himself in two different yet related positions. One reflection is in the light, the other in the former’s shadow. “The smart phone was essential in the process,” he says. “Constantly checking details that were hard to ascertain when looking straight in the mirror.” The work was inspired by a double self-portrait by Austrian painter Egon Schiele, who Hans admires for his bold yet intimate portrayal of his subjects. The unfinished strokes of oil on Han’s canvas reflects the transitory nature of this scene as he holds the mirror unto himself.
