“I like the thought of flying away from it all”, says New Zealand-based artist Emma Hercus. “Climbing up onto a bird and flying away to who knows where. I think with so many dire issues affecting the people of the world today, we need some escapism and a sense of fun.” The work Leaving Home, a playful dreamscape bursting with colour, is born from this desire for freedom and adventure. The artist has employed layers of paint and pattern to bring this surreal world to life, her use of a variety of textures permeating the canvas with a sense of movement and flow.
The bright red underlayer drives Hercus’ fantastical birds right out into the viewer’s space, and unifies the various planes of the composition where it peeks out from behind the layers above. By choosing such a brilliant hue as the foundation for this work, the more calming tones of blue, green and yellow that dominate her landscape become animated with an inner warmth, producing a scene that is literally bursting at the seams with a joyful energy. Leaving Home is a window looking in on a brighter, better world, defined only by the limits of the viewer’s imagination.
