Going to Lamma… (or where imagination calls you) by artist Da Claong is a meditation on thought, embodying the endless possibilities of the mind using the chance application of oils on linen. By blending Buddhist traditions of flung ink painting – a practice where ink is spilled on to paper during meditation – with contemporary intellectual engagements with the theory of abstraction, Da aims to produce works that capture a fleeting emotion or sensation. This particular work, Da explains, is “looking ahead to potential possibilities”, inspired by contemplations of the future and its infinite capacity for change. The work is delicate, in places almost translucent, making solid the ephemeral nature of thought. The oils run across the linen in a variety of directions determined by chance and serendipity, each line dividing and converging in a manner that grants the paint a mind of its own. By completely rejecting figuration, Da allows the viewer to impute their own meaning in the piece, creating a work that is therapeutic for both artist and audience.
