For Tasmanian-based artist Corinne Costello, the idea of the unravelling line has become an abstracted code to help visualise the formlessness of void space. Why do I stay in these Blue Mountains continues Corinne’s investigation of space and seeks to capture the silently spoken works of Chinese poets on the Huangshan mountain range. A recent trip to the area sparked the artist’s interest in East Asian aesthetics, which she now couples with her extensive background in Old Master Oil painting. Her resulting work is a powerful visualisation of the fluctuation between static and ephemeral space, with sharp edges contrasting soft to create an illusion of depth. Within this narrative the white line dissecting the work can easily be read as an exhale of breath wafting skyward in the early hours of the day along the Huangshan mountain range.
