Fluorescent Series #1 by Annie Howard is a work of delightful contrasts. The Sydney-based artist’s practice is heavily informed by minimalism, yet her work does not shy away from colour or texture. Instead, her investigation of the grid has produced a work that is both simple and expansive. While she looks to simplify shapes and forms, her use of vivid pink spandex as a base, which she then covers with hessian, results in a materially complex work. This has the effect of making a simple grid both bright and tactile, encouraging the viewer to reach out and touch. By removing strings from the hessian, her grid is composed of both presence and absence, using the elimination of material as means of creation. While she is only at the beginning of her career, it is clear that Annie has already developed a deeply informed practice, utilising the very nature of her materials to structurally and theoretically investigate the form of the grid. She demonstrates that minimalism need not be stark or clinical, and produces works that is both restrained in style and joyful in execution.
