The work: Ann Gordon, The road to Federal Falls…Mt Canobolas. Acrylic and charcoal on canvas, 91 x 76cm
Taking inspiration from the plein air works done in her journal, Ann Gordon explores environmental regeneration and regrowth in her latest body of work. Her painting process is intuitive and abstract, allowing the essence of a landscape to guide her practice. In The road to Federal Falls, Ann uses mixed media to convey the energy of the recovering bushland in Mount Canobolas which she visited earlier in the year. She perceives its recovery to be a marvellous phenomenon, brimming with life, vitality and beauty. By using methods of paint layering, working with flux and alternating layers of mark making and veiling, Ann strikes a perfect balance between the mood and energy of being there – poignantly capturing her connection to the bushland. Contrasting between dark charcoal colours and soft earthy hues, the work simultaneously grieves for the past and hopes for the future. Her work invites deep reflection of events such as the devastation of the recent bushfires and current pandemic.
